Materials
6 cords, each 60 cm (two feet) long, approx.
12 small beads.
1 key ring.
Method
All the flat knots use two cords as fillers.
Imagine numbering the cords from the left hand side and work as follows.
(note: These numbers do not belong to the cords, but the numbers attached
to each cord will change as the cords are moved from row to row).
a) Fold each cord in half and mount onto the key ring with lark's head knots.
b) Using cords 1,2,3,4 work one flat knot with two filler knots.
c) Make two flat knots using cords 5,6,7,8 and then 9,10,11,12.
d) Make one flat knot using cords 7,8,9,10.
e) With cord 1, make diagonal double half hitches down to the right using cords
2,3,4,5,6.
f) With cord 12, make diagonal double half hitches down to the left using cords
11,10,9,8,7.
g) Tie cords 6 and 7 together with one simple knot.
h) Make two flat knots with cords 2,3,4,5 and then 8,9,10,11.
i) Thread two beads onto cords 1 and 12 with an overhand knot in between.
j) With cord 7, make diagonal double half hitches down to the right, using cords
8,9,10,11,12.
k) With cord 6, make diagonal double half hitches down to the left, using cords
5,4,3,2,1.
l) Make one flat knot using cords 5,6,7,8.
m) Make two flat knots using cords 2,3,4,5 and then 7,8,9,10.
n) Make three flat knots using cords 1,2,3,4, and then 5,6,7,8 and then 9,10,11,12.
o) With cord 1, make a horizontal row of double half hitches to the right using all of the other cords.
p) With cord 12, make a horizontal row of double half hitches to the left using all of the other cords.
q) Repeat the pattern from step b) to step p).
r) Finish off the cords, either by knotting them in pairs or by threading small beads onto the
cord ends, holding them in place with a simple overhand knot.
s) Trim the cord ends and stop them fraying with a drop of clear nail varnish.
